Last night, we attended Touchdown for Tots to raise money for Seattle's Children's Hospital and it was a very fun and special evening. The theme was football and during the event the Washington Husky football game was being played on the big screen.
The dress attire for this fundraiser was to wear your favorite sports team colors and most people were either Husky or Seahawk fans. The Huskies are rated #4 in the country this year with a new coach, Chris Peterson, who just came to Seattle three years ago from Boise State. He was very popular in Boise when we lived there, everyone called him "Coach Pete". (I guess you could say we followed him to Seattle.) Maybe it's just me but I think he looks a lot better in purple and gold - but then I'm partial because I'm an old Husky myself.
Anyway, now the Huskies are doing really great under Coach Peterson and the whole city is ecstatic. The University of Washington hasn't had a team this good since 1991. Yesterday, the ESPN College GameDay was on the U. W. campus broadcasting bright and early
as well as broadcasting everything Seattle - like throwing fish
and notice the plate of Ivar's salmon in front of them. They also showed clips of the U.W. rowing team practicing out on Lake Washington (reminiscent of the best seller Boys in the Boat) and one of the broadcasters who is a Heisman winner and Super Bowl MVP, Desmond Howard, was spotted in our neighborhood gem, Easy Street.
The celebrity picker yesterday was actor and comedian, Joel McHale, who actually played football for the Huskies on the 1991 National Championship team. So, I'd say he was the perfect celebrity host.
I remember Joel McHale from a local Seattle T.V. show called Almost Live! that was a low budget, sketch comedy show in the 80's and 90's. It came on right before Saturday Night Live each week and it turned out to be a Seattle classic, some of the reruns are still on T.V. In fact, in July we went to a reunion/book signing at the Elliott Bay Bookstore of the Almost Live! cast to promote a book about the show called Almost Live! The Show That Wouldn't Die. (FYI, Joel McHale did not show up for it)
The biggest star that came from that show was Bill Nye, the Science Guy. He's in a clip here with Joel McHale in Goldenbutt, a James Bond parody. Joel does a great Jim Carrey impersonation as James Bond and Bill Nye as "Q". Anyway, that was a great show and Joel was perfect for ESPN GameDay celebrity picker. (ESPN GameDay always picks a local celebrity each week from the city where they travel to list who will win or lose each college football game.) Yesterday, was a big day for football here in Seattle but sadly, the Huskies lost to USC. But that did not dampen our evening of bidding on silent auction items
and bidding on live auction items, including gorgeous desserts.
Our table ended up getting the blackberry pie for dessert but this was after a wonderful dinner provided by Celtic Cowboy BBQ that included barbecued pulled pork or chicken sandwiches, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, salad and muffins.
They also had an open bar of beer and wine so we were well taken care of. The highlight of the evening was listening to young, 18-year old Kat, tell her story of her cancer four years ago and her treatment at Seattle Children's. She recalled her journey in a very well-spoken, touching manner giving credit to all the children "warriors" who are battling daily at Seattle's Children's Hospital. It was hard to keep a dry eye as she described how her life as a typical teen changed forever. She spoke at length with such grace and composure, it was hard to believe she was just 18 years old. She was amazing and she continues to donate her time to be a voice for all the children going through what she experienced via Kat's Crew. While it was a fun evening of food and drink, remembering where our money was actually going, also made it a fulfilling evening. I'd show and tell you the three wonderful auction items I bought but they are Christmas presents so I have to keep it a secret for now. And I won't tell you how much they cost, either. Because it's not the cost we think about, it's all the children and teens like Kat that need our help to ease the burden that - for no reason of their own - they and their families are plunged into, the battle of their life. We need to give a touchdown for these tots. Cheer, give and win.
