Revisiting a Spanish Favorite: Vejer

And here we are again. Our favorite little spot in Spain; the white hill town of Vejer. The grandkids still had a couple of days of school left when we arrived at Nick's house so Nick planned some non-kid activities for us to do while they were in school. The first on the list was going to Vejer. We were here last June  and and it was one of our favorite days.  Above is our winter visit; below is our summer visit.  Cold weather, warm weather...                     We planned to eat lunch here because of the strong Moorish influence. They have a wonderful Morrocan restaurant called El Jardin Del Califa  where we also ate in June.  I had my favorite Moroccan tea again.  And everyone ordered something different since their menu had a lot of variety.  It was catorgized by ingredients and recipes such as couscous dishes, tagine dishes, different meat dishes, etc. We started off with this appetizer sampler ...

Cádiz, Spain

We've been home from Spain for 3-1/2 weeks  now (it seems much longer because July has been such a busy month with everyone's birthdays, etc) but I never finished writing about our adventures so here is a continuation.  I did write about Paris on our anniversary  here  which is where we ended our trip.  Of course, we definitely want to go back and since we've been home, we keep talking about plans for future visits.  It's hard to get it out of your system.  So, as you can see, it's been 3-1/2 weeks and I'm still thinking of things to write.  The above photo was taken in Cádiz, Spain which is the largest city near where Nick lives in El Puerto de Santa Maria.  I mentioned it before because Bruce and I went shopping at the mall there.  It is a super old city, founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC and where Christopher Columbus sailed out of for two of his journeys.  It is considered the most ancient city still standing in W...

Vejer and the White Hill Towns of Spain

Over the weekend, we headed south where Bruce and Nick wanted to played golf and where we could see the Rock of Gibraltar that I showed in my last post here .   It was perfect timing because we escaped a heat wave and it was nice and cool at the Bay of Gibraltar.  Below is a photo during our drive back north with Africa behind us and the Strait of Gibraltar.  Nick made reservations for dinner at a quaint little hill town that we passed call Vejer de la Frontera and it turned out to be the most wonderful time yet.   Vejer has very strong Moorish roots and has a very distinct Moroccan (and Greek Island) flavor to it. How can you NOT love that!   The Moors were muslims and lived in Spain for 800 years until they were forced out for political and religious reasons in 1492.   They resettled in Northern Africa but you can still see their mark in much of Spain from the remains of their mosques, architecture, art, sophisticated irrigation systems that they ex...
