Ground Cherries

I discovered a new fruit last week while shopping at our local farmers market.  We had relatives visiting from the Midwest and they spotted these ground cherries at one of the fruit stands and bought us a container since we'd never seen them before. They are the most interesting little fruit.  They fall from the tree when ripe so are harvested by picking them up off the ground during late summer and early fall.  They have a paper-like husk that you peel off before you pop them into your mouth. They look like a yellow cherry tomato but they have the taste similar to a grape only less sweet and they look like a grape inside, too. They are related more to tomatillos than a grape, however, and are part of the nightshade family.  They are similar in nutrition to tomatoes with lots of vitamins A and C, beta-carotene and potassium. I didn't think they had much taste, a very mellow sweetness but we had fun eating them while Bruce's nephew and his family were here who knew a...

Temaki and Miso Soup

Tonight, we were pampered with a most delicious dinner of temaki and miso soup.  We've been having too much fun since Nick and Sachiyo arrived two days ago with our new little grand baby, Hana, and we've been enjoying every minute including a wonderful dinner tonight.  The first night they were here we had  beef stroganoff  and last night we had roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. If you're wondering why the gravy is so light colored, it's because the roast beef didn't have much juice so I made the gravy using some of the  turkey stock  I made on Saturday.  Nick just needed his red meat fix and mashed potatoes and gravy fix.  He also wanted a pecan pie for dessert since he missed Thanksgiving so I made a  bourbon pecan pie and he had it with both ice cream and whipped cream. Tonight, he was ready to go back to his Japanese diet so he and Sachiyo made a very common Japanese meal to share with us called tem...

First Barbecue of the Season

We had our first barbecue of the season the other night to honor our visitors, Peter and Stephanie, who were visiting from Iowa. We had 14 people over from Bruce's office (along with one police officer who dropped in for a bite to eat also known as my brother!) Peter and Stephanie lived here 5 years ago so it was fun to plan a get-together so they could visit with everyone again. We made our   barbecued ribs   on the Treager, along with the above accompaniments.  I was able to use chives from the garden for the  biscuits  and made one of the pies with a gluten-free crust for 3 people who came who eat a gluten-free diet.  It turned out delicious, by using my apple pie  recipe but switched out the crust with this gluten-free flour I bought at Costco as I was shopping there for the ribs. The pie basically tasted like it was made with whole wheat crust but otherwise tasted great (along with some i...
