Yakitori

I know Labor Day is approaching so if you're looking for something to barbecue other than hot dogs and hamburgers, here's an alternative.  I love anything that's marinated, lets face it. And then cooked on the grill is just the best!  This is a simple recipe using chicken thighs that is popular in Japan.  In Japan, they use chicken thighs, green onion, chicken liver, hearts, gizzards, and chicken skin.  Needless to say, I modify it a bit by using only skinless, boneless, chicken thighs. Makes 4 servings (1 kebab) 1/4 cup sake (rice wine) 1/4 cup soy sauce 3 Tbsp. sugar 2 Tbsp grated peeled fresh ginger 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into 24 bite-size pieces 5 green onions, each cut into 4 (2-inch) pieces 1.  Combine the first 6 ingredients in a small saucepan. 2.  Bring to a boil and let cook until it boils down to just 1/4 cup. 3.  Remove from heat and cool.   This is a good t

Fair Food

This was the last weekend of the Fair so we decided to check it out last night. Everyone has their favorite part of the Fair...the food the rides  the animals the entertainment the blue ribbon winners  the old-fashioned farm competitions …I'm not sure what mine is but I know it's not the food!  We have a term in our family when we go somewhere and the food is bad we'll say, "It's like Fair Food!" We just got overdosed on it when Nick and Lauren were in 4-H and we spent a lot of time at the Fair. I'm only now just starting to enjoy going to the Fair again.  I actually ran into two moms from 4-H who are still volunteering in different animal sections.  It was fun visiting with them and hearing about their children as adults now when I still remember them as little 4-Hers.  I guess I'd have to say my favorite part of the Fair is the memories ! It's fun remembering those 4-H days but I don't m

Tacos Tonight

Right after I said we've been grilling something every night, tonight we didn't. We had tacos! Homemade, that is. The barbecue was out of commission tonight because we had a little rain from a storm moving through the area. And we don't like barbecuing in the rain so it was a good night for tacos with our  homemade corn tortillas .   This means an easy dinner for me because Bruce loves making these. A good dinner for a rainy day.

Tuna Boats

I realize I haven't actually posted a recipe lately on this blog because I've been too busy going here and there all summer but let me assure you, I have been eating and not just at restaurants.  Our usual meal consists of some type of grilled meat on the barbecue with salad or zucchini or corn or other summer vegetable.  Pretty simple, nothing fancy.  And since we still have a freezer full of fish from Bruce's  fishing trip , we have no shortage of supply of fish which is what we usually barbecue.  Last week we had fish 3 times, as you can see why. Chicken is the second most popular choice, or game hens or something like that.  I admit, however, I have been lazy this summer and I've been buying those salmon and hamburger patties of different flavors at Whole Foods which are delicious on the barbecue, too. Shopping at Whole Foods can make you a lazy cook because all their pre-made stuff is so delicious!   Recently, I made a family favorite we call Tuna Boat
