Pineapple Turmeric Breakfast Smoothie

One of the habits that I've changed since I started following  Hannah Freese, RD 's diet is to be sure and eat a high fat breakfast.  Her meal plans start you off on all kinds of delicious high fat breakfasts which I have no complaints about at all.  Her diet has five steps and I'm currently on Step 4 where you reset your appetite control center which is your brain.  In other words, we are learning why we eat and learning how to stop eating for emotional reasons and learn to eat for nutritional reasons only.  This is a three week process.  Her diet is really a full on course, not just a diet.  There is so much to relearn!  The fact that I was trained as a dietitian and worked in the field for 35 years makes it almost harder for me because she is telling us to do so many things I would have NEVER told my patients to do.  I've been retired for five years but I can't believe how much has changed.  Eating high fat? Gasp!  Do not ...

Green Smoothie with Kale

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I'm starting my day with a green smoothie, appropriate for St. Patrick's Day today and also appropriate after a week of eating  Southern cooking  in  Savannah .   (Not that I'm complaining or anything)  I've posted a couple other   green smoothies   on my blog in the past but it seems like each time I make one, it's always a little different depending on the ingredients I have on hand so there is really no wrong or right recipe. There are few "must haves" for making a green smoothie, however.  First of all, you must have something "green".  Today, I used kale. And usually there is a banana thrown in a green smoothie. After than, I decided to add a sliced apple, a kiwi (because it's green). Another "must have" is a liquid.  I like to use coconut water as my liquid because it is high in potassium and no matter how many bananas, tomatoes, potatoes or oranges you eat, it's alw...

Green Smoothie with Frozen Fruit

I'm not sure why I'm posting this because I've made so many "green smoothies" since my first  smoothie post  in June and they all taste delicious and it doesn't really seem to matter what I put in it!  And they all look the same!  But anyway, here is another smoothie I made today to "cleanse" after going out last night for my sister's birthday.  I had prime rib so after eating all that red meat, I need to cleanse now with a green veggie smoothie!  Last June, we had an abundance of lettuce from the garden so this time my smoothie is made with organic baby lettuce.  I used 3 cups. Then I added a couple handfuls of organic blueberries and 3-4 frozen strawberries which act as ice cubes with flavor. Then I added 1 cup of coconut water for the liquid to get that kick of potassium and threw in a banana and there is was.  Delicious.  And just like the last one I posted, it was very easy to drink down.  Rejuvenated.

Green Smoothie with Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

I picked some lettuce from the garden today and some green onions (along with an egg that one of the chickens laid in the garden...)  The lettuce is abundant. This is the salad season for sure but you can only eat so many salads so I discovered a new recipe so I can eat lettuce for breakfast, too.  It's a green smoothie.  Perfect.  Here's the recipe- Green Smoothie 1 bag of freshly picked, organic leaf lettuce 3  stalks of celery 2 medium apples, cored and chopped 1 banana juice of 1 lemon 1-1/2 cups of coconut water a few ice cubes 1.  Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.   This recipe has 395 calories, 14 grams of fiber, with a whopping 2,500mg potassium!  When you consider the recommended daily intake for potassium is 4,700 mg, this is a good way to start out the day.  (A banana has 400 mg)  The trick is using coconut water, which is a very popular item in stores right now. ...
