Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, yams, green gelatin salad, rolls...you know the drill. It's Thanksgiving, once again, with all the usual fixin's.  Our family has never made green bean casserole for Thanksgiving.  This year I wanted to make it only in a healthier manner.  So, I did and people liked it!  Instead of canned green beans I used fresh green beans so there was a big difference right there.  Then I used my homemade mushroom soup .  I was going to make homemade onion rings but opted for the easier version of just buying some Funyuns which I'd never had before so I tried them and they were pretty good!  Plus, they were cute, as you can see from the above photo.  I used a tube of the "minis".   For whatever reason, I just didn't feel like the usual Brussel sprouts for Thanksgiving this year so the green bean casserole sounded really good to me.  Now, I think I will make this each Than...

Best Chex Party Mix

You are probably wondering why I am posting a recipe for Chex Party Mix.  Anybody can get the recipe off the box of any Chex cereal, right?  That' s what we did for years.  I use to make this during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays when the kids were little and everyone loved it.  But that was before you could buy it pre-made in a bag in all stores like a bag of potato chips. When Bruce was shopping at Costco last month,  he said he almost grabbed a bag of Chex Party Mix for our Thanksgiving guests.  But then when he was in the cereal aisle,  he saw you could buy all three Chex cereals together (he always buys his Cheerios and Grapenuts at Costco) and decided it would be fun to make it homemade again.  So, he came home with the three Chex cereals and made it from scratch. We had several bowls of it out for Thanksgiving, all of which got completely eaten and people even commented how good it was.  I admit I ate my share, as well and it was ...

Chocolate Cream Truffles

Over the weekend, I tried a new recipe that makes for a perfect little hostess gift to take to someone's house when you are a guest. With the holidays here, we could all use some ideas like these. As you can see, we put up our Christmas tree this weekend so, yes; the holidays are here.                          This week I am preparing Thanksgiving at our house and will be hosting 9 people including Lauren, Nick and family, and my niece and husband coming from a town about 1-1/2 hours away so we are all excited about Thursday.  In my family, it's all about the food!  And you know how we all love to eat... Here's the rundown to my Thanksgiving menu: the turkey - we will be brining our turkey like we always do with this  wet brine  recipe that I've been using for years.  Then we smoke it in the Traeger and it's the BEST turkey ever!   the stuffing - I always make my  mom's recipe  using...

Apple Hand Pies

We have these a lot at our house so when we had these again on Thanksgiving, I realized that I have never posted the recipe.  I just made up this recipe for the grandkids because it's so much easier for them to eat pie like this.  It's sort of like a pop tart.  Nick requested these on Thanksgiving because the grandkids don't like pumpkin or pecan pie, the two types of pies I make for Thanksgiving and these are their favorite dessert.  They usually help me make them and they think it's great fun.                            So, we made them again for Thanksgiving.  We ate them on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and again on Thanksgiving so it was an extra special time for them.                         Since the kids spent the night before Thanksgiving, we had barbecued cheeseburgers for dinner and I  brought out some of the ...

Thanksgiving Leftovers

Have you all come out of your food coma yet?  I hope so.  We had seven people here for our Thanksgiving and it was a whirlwind.  The two grandkids were nonstop but then isn't that how grandkids are suppose to be?  The grandkids had a sleepover the night before so we had a full day of Thanksgiving playtime.  Lauren, Nick and Sachiyo eventually made their way over for our Thanksgiving dinner and it was a great time.  All the food was superb, of course.   I love Thanksgiving food. Our turkey was grand.  We did our usual  wet brine  and then cooked it on the Traeger.  The grandkids were intrigued with all the hoopla going on about the turkey. Of course, their favorite part of the meal was the turkey and the  Rhodes Bake-and-Serve Rolls . The 5 year-old ate three of the rolls and a turkey wing and drumstick.  I've always served the Rhodes frozen bake-and-serve rolls because everyone loves them so much and they taste just like...
