Sitka & Spruce

One of the highlights of my visit to Seattle this weekend was to celebrate Lauren's 23rd birthday.  We let her choose a restaurant of her choice to have dinner and she chose Sitka & Spruce, which is unique in many ways.   It is located on Capitol Hill at the Melrose Market (formerly it was located on Eastlake).  I've read about it in Sunset magazine so when Lauren mentioned it, I wasn't totally in the dark about it and was eager to go there myself. The Melrose Market is a fairly small but upscale mall that houses a cool clothing shop, a hip bar, a cheesemonger, a butcher shop, a gift shop, and a florist. We loved poking around at all they had to offer here. Lots of yummy snacks in this mall, not your typical "food court". But we were saving our appetite for Sitka & Spruce.  Chef owner, Matt Dillon, prepares simple, clear, lovely flavors; sauces are sparing, nothing is over-bearing, and all is local and f

Breakfast in Seattle

I know my last post was about staying at the  Bed and Breakfast  so why am I going out for breakfast?  I realize it was not a practical thing for me to arrange these accommodations for my stay in Seattle since BREAKFAST IS MY FAVORITE MEAL TO EAT OUT IN SEATTLE!  So, I had only a little snack of coffee and banana bread at the B & B and then Lauren walked over from her house to check out my digs.  We have so many favorite breakfast restaurants in Seattle, I can't even begin to name them all, but I'll try - Julia's,  Eggcetera (Blue Star Cafe), Dahlia's, the Sunflower, Bagel Oasis…and so many more.  Today, we went to the Volunteer Park Cafe and Marketplace. Lauren had heard about this place because they use eggs from their backyard chickens and grow a lot of their own fresh veggies and herbs. And it was only a few block's from Mildred's.  Perfect.  So we walked on over to try out this neighborhood eatery. In Seattle, you can get bold, ri

Mildred's Bed & Breakfast

I am staying at a Bed & Breakfast during my visit to Seattle as an extra special treat this weekend. So, I found this one called Mildred's Bed & Breakfast which is the oldest Bed & Breakfast in Seattle. It is located on North Capitol Hill across the street from Volunteer Park - can't get a much better location than that! It started out as a boarding house in the 1940's by Mildred, who is the mother-in-law of the current owner, Melody. After Mildred's husband died, she started the business by turning the old boarding house into a Bed & Breakfast in 1982. I am in the Blue Room. I slept so good last night! There something very tranquil about this place. And it's cat-friendly, which is always a good thing. Mildred's has had a black & white cat residing here for the past 40 years. The accommodations are lovely. I am more than comfortable. The owner, Melody, and the fellow guests
