Happy Birthday, Bruce

Bruce's birthday this year was more of a low key birthday than last year when he had four different celebrations for turning 70. Another year has gone by already and here we are celebrating again. This year, we went to Seaside, Oregon; one of our favorite spots to go to for the past 35 years. We have lots of wonderful memories here and still love going to Seaside whenever we get the chance. This year, Lauren was able to join us since she now lives in Portland which is only an hour and a half away from Seaside vs. the three and a half hours away for us. We spent the weekend in Portland and then drove out to the beach for Bruce's birthday on Monday. She was a great host in Portland and we had a wonderful barbecue at her house similar to what we've been doing all summer. I guess she inherited my genes... She and her boyfriend, Dustin, took us out to many of Portland's finest eating scenes and there are many.   They live in a very cute neighborhood with lots of neighbo...

Seaside

Once again, we made a trip south to the Oregon Coast and stayed at our favorite little town of Seaside, Oregon.   The above photo is from the neighboring town of Cannon Beach where we like visit to see the famous Haystack Rock. We love staying at Seaside, however, because they have the Promenade or "the Prom" which is a wonderful walkway along the beach where we can get in our daily walk.                        I love looking at all the gorgeous beach homes along the Prom and check out how they've change over the years with remodeling and upgrading.  And it's also a great way to walk into the little downtown full of shopping, restaurants, and arcade. This year, we just made a quick trip down to Seaside for a visit with Bruce's brother's family who were there for a week. His brother was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with their kids and grandkids that included 12 people.  They all live in the Midwest s...

Bruce’s Birthday at the Beach

Bruce’s birthday is always near Labor Day so this year we planned a family vacation at Seaside, Oregon  as a nice end-of-the-summer celebration.  The picture below was taken in the town next to Seaside, Cannon Beach, with the famous Haystack Rock that we always try to visit at low tide at least once while we’re there.  We rented a vacation rental home that was a couple blocks from the beach so it was perfect.  It even had a nice hot tub.  Yippee!  We all love a hot tub.  The grandkids love the beach and it was fun being with them and discovering all the wonders of this endless playground.  We did lots of kite flying, sand castle building, running with waves, sand dollar hunting and pretty much anything else you do at the beach.                                                                ...

Tom 'N Larry Candy

Our favorite candy shop in Seaside is Tom 'N Larry's.  They make their candies daily  and pack each piece conveniently for your purchase. There's nothing really fancy about their shop that has been here for 45 years   and they'll stay open however long they need to. It's a little shop, large enough to make the candy and for a customer to step in and make a purchase.  That's all. We usually stop in several times during our stays in Seaside  like to pick up some carmel corn before a parade  or to buy some to take home or for gifts. Bruce likes peanut brittle and I like rocky road.  But there really isn't any flavor we don't like. Tom and Larry's is another Seaside tradition and another reason why we keep returning to our favorite little beach town.
