Father's Day 2026

In our family, Father's Day and baseball go hand in hand so once again this year we were off to another Mariner baseball game for Father's Day, one of Bruce's favorite pastimes.  My brother was visiting so he and his wife joined us.  They were here to attend the World Cup where Seattle is one of the cities in North America hosting games.  We are having six games here, including the USA team where they won their match. It was definitely on my brother's bucket list to experience such a thing since they are huge soccer fans so I'm glad we could accommodate them during their visit.

Father's Day was a beautiful day this year

and the Mariners won so it was a fun day.  Bruce barbecued hamburgers which is another one of his favorite pastimes - having a barbecue.

My sister brought a fruit salad, my nephew brought our favorite Pasta & Co. house salad, and I made a family favorite pasta colelsaw.

Bruce offered three kinds of cheeseburgers.  What a guy.  It was a very fun celebration of all the dads.

My sister and her husband were also visiting the week before my brother got here so we've had back to back entertaining at our house and our weather was very cooperative. Here we are enjoying a beach day at our neighborhood's Alki beach that was having an unusually low tide.

She had a family reunion with her children, some were from out-of-town, and then they rented a vacation home up in the San Juan islands.  While they were all gathering in town, I hosted another barbecue with a total of 17 people, one of the few opportunities for everyone to see each other who aren't otherwise in town. Bruce barbecued a turkey, the exact same way we barbecue our Thanksgiving turkey that feeds a big crowd and it was wonderful. It's my favorite turkey recipe. The challenge is finding a whole turkey at a grocery store in the summer.  But one of our local grocery stores, Thriftway, carries them year-around, thank goodness.

I was eager to have all our favorite summer foods since it was our first summer barbecue of the year so I cooked up some baked beans, corn on the cob, watermelon, potato salad and banana splits for dessert. We went through a whole half gallon of vanilla ice cream for the banana splits, probably because I made my homemade chocolate sauce.  This is one of everyone's favorite desserts plus it was a nice, warm evening so it was perfect.  It doesn't get much better than that.

I know that summer has only just begun but I feel like it has been going on quite a long time with all this activity going on.  We've had really warm weather and we've been doing so much summer-type stuff.  The World Cup has turned our city into a huge party with indoor and outdoor watch parties everywhere.  We've been down at the festivities in town twice for baseball games.  The baseball stadium is right next to the soccer stadium so we see all the festivities.  It's fun to see all the different soccer jerseys everywhere and so many people in town from all over the world.  Many also attended the baseball games, too, and are so proud to show off their countries.  The USA played Australia the day after we went to the Mariner baseball game so we saw Aussies everywhere!  They were having a GREAT time.

The Mariner Moose was wearing a USA soccer team

and so were the statues of Ken Griffey, Jr, Ichiro, and Edgar Martinez.

Right now, Seattle is all about the World Cup. We plan to go see more festivites next week when the knock-out games are going on. Team USA may be back, it all just depends on how the win/losses unfold for the brackets.  Summertime has arrived with a bang!  Happy Father's Day!

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friend lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, t...

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides ...

Two-Bean Soup with Kale

This hearty vegetarian soup warms up chilly nights.  Use any type of canned beans you happen to have on hand and add chicken or Italian sausage for a heftier dish, if you prefer.
