This Mother's Day my sister, Barbara, made a special treat for us. It was an espresso martini that she had first made with my cousin during her visit to New York City recently. My cousin had been tweeking this recipe for awhile and when my sister visited her in April, she was eager for Barbara to try her perfected version. This is the same cousin who I wrote about
here who does the waffle parties in her New York apartment. My sister hosted a barbecue at her house on Mother's Day with Bruce and I, her son and his wife and their kids. Here are the three moms together with our special espresso martinis.
The men fired up the barbecue and cooked some bratwurst for dinner and we all contributed some salads to accompany them. It made for another wonderful family feast, something my family is very good at pulling together.
And a lovely coconut cake for dessert to top it off.
Now, back to his espresso martini. I could tell when I tasted it that it was something special. It went down really easy, the right balance of sweetness and coffee flavor yet you could still taste the alcohol. And they were so festive looking! Topped with three coffee beans to represent good health, wealth and happiness. How can you NOT love a drink like that? There are a few different ways you can concoct this drink. I haven't made it yet but plan to soon. I think it would be perfect for a brunch. We usually host visitors in the summer and I can see myself putting together a few espresso martinis to start a summer day in Seattle. You will need some special equipment to make one:
A cocktail shaker, such as this:
and a milk frother wand, such as this:
You will need to be able to make some espresso and let it cool so you can shake it up in the cocktail shaker. If you don't have an espresso maker, you can use 1 oz. of cold brew concentrate such as this:
The last item you will need is some espresso syrup like this one from
Amazon. I will need to make a lot of espresso martinis to use up one of this bottle:
I've written the recipe to make one drink but you can double it if you want to make two drinks at a time. I put those quanities in parenthesis. I am eager to make one and when I do, I will add any other tips to asure it's perfection. Cheers to all the mom's out there on this Mother's Day.
