Best Chex Party Mix

You are probably wondering why I am posting a recipe for Chex Party Mix.  Anybody can get the recipe off the box of any Chex cereal, right?  That' s what we did for years.  I use to make this during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays when the kids were little and everyone loved it.  But that was before you could buy it pre-made in a bag in all stores like a bag of potato chips. When Bruce was shopping at Costco last month,  he said he almost grabbed a bag of Chex Party Mix for our Thanksgiving guests.  But then when he was in the cereal aisle,  he saw you could buy all three Chex cereals together (he always buys his Cheerios and Grapenuts at Costco) and decided it would be fun to make it homemade again.  So, he came home with the three Chex cereals and made it from scratch. We had several bowls of it out for Thanksgiving, all of which got completely eaten and people even commented how good it was.  I admit I ate my share, as well and it was yummy.  Then Bruce made it again.  This time I asked him to make a couple of changes, like put raw nuts in it so we don't get seed oils from the roasted nuts.  I only eat avocado oil, olive oil and butter for my anti-inflammatory diet and since I was finding myself having a hard time resisting his Chex Party Mix, I figure that we might as well make it as healthy as possible.  So, he made it again.  And soon it was gone. The next time he wanted to make it, I said, "before you make it again, I want the good kind of pretzels".  I realized I was pretty picky about my Chex Party Mix.  So, the next time we went to the grocery store, I bought Rold Gold pretzels, the best kind, in my opinion.  These are the ones I always used when the kids were little.  They are so much better because they are nice and thin, crisp with the perfect snap when you crunch on them plus I like straight pretzels for Chex Party Mix.

To make a long story short, we've been through a whole bag of pretzels (the recipe only uses 1 cup per batch)  and Bruce has been back to Costco to buy another threesome of Chex cereal.

He also switched out the garlic-flavored bagel chips for Simply Naked pita chips that he always has on hand for a snack.  They are a more plain flavored addition since this recipe has so many spices in it already. You don't want the flavors to be over-kill.  The Worcestershire sauce, butter, seasoned salt and spices add enough flavor.  This was the best batch he made, yet!  We both decided this was our best Chex Party Mix.  Now, we have a container of Chex Party Mix on hand all the time, along with a container of our Herbed Spice Nuts and I don't have to make any of it because Bruce makes both of them, his favorite snacks.  I don't really eat that much of it, it's not part of my Hannah Freeze diet, but I figure if Bruce likes it and wants to eat it, I can't help but to put in my two cents worth and make it taste the best it can taste.  And, I do admit, this Chex Party mix is the best batch we've made.  We've put it out when others have come over since Thanksgiving and people will always eat it right up, quite quickly, too.  So, I know it's a good recipe by the reaction of guests when they come over.  We had eleven people here for Thanksgiving and had several bowls of it out along with many other appetizers but all the bowls were empty by the time dinner was served.  Our turkey was fabulous, by the way, using my tried and true Thanksgiving turkey recipe.

We will probably always put some of this Chex Party Mix out now after seeing how much people like it.  It's not the most sophisticated appetizer, I know, but people love it.  And not only the children; we witnessed the adults digging into it just as much as the kids.  I still associate this recipe with the holidays and plan to keep putting it out during Christmas and New Year's.  Actually, it's also a good recipe to put out during football games - lots of those coming up.   If you want to be the hostess with the mostest, go ahead a put out this age-old recipe from the past that people never get tired of.  It may even bring back a few memories of their own.

3 cups each of Corn Chex, Rice Chex and Wheat Chex cereal (9 cups total)
1 cup of mixed raw nuts - we use raw walnuts, cashews, almonds and pecans
1 cup Rold Gold pretzel sticks
1 cup Simply Naked pita chips
1 stick butter
2 Tbsp. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce
1- 1/2 tsp. seasoned salt
3/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder

1.  Preheat oven to 250 degree F.

2. In a large bowl, mix cereal, nuts, pretzels and pita chips.

3. In a small microwavable bowl, microwave butter on high for 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in seasonings and Worcestershire sauce.  Pour over the cereal mixture, stir to coat.  Place in a large 15 x 11 x 2-1/2" pan.  (We use our turkey pan)

4.  Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friend lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, t...

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides ...

Waking Up in Vegas

and just like that...we were Waking Up in Vegas.   Just like the Katy Perry song. We went to her 78th performance which was her second-to-last Las Vegas residency show entitled "Play".  That was perfect for us because we went to Vegas simply to play.  Her concert was a great finale for us because it was high energy and full of silliness, just the way Katy Perry is.  And we were feeling it after three nights in Las Vegas. "Get up, and shake the gutter off your clothes now, That's what you get for waking up in Vegas".    Here's what she said about her show: "I created this show after the birth of my daughter, Daisy Dove. When I met her, it was like all the love I was ever searching for finally showed up. This show is for everyone’s inner child and for the hope that maybe if we could all see life through the eyes of a child, we would be free. Because never forget, love is and will always be the key,” she said. We went to Vegas spur of the moment because Br...
