Birthday Beer Tasting

Yesterday, we celebrated Bruce's birthday by doing some of his favorite things, which everyone ought to do on their birthday, right?  Of course, his favorite thing is for me to cook a dinner and make his favorite carrot cake like we did in 2015.  But his second favorite thing would be to go to a baseball game, have some good beer along with some good beer-tasting food to go along with it.  The Mariners were having a special beer-tasting event going on last night for season ticket holders and thirty-three people signed up for it, including us.

It wasn't as extensive of a beer-tasting as the one we went to for my birthday in 2015 hosted by Schooner Exact brewery but it was still pretty good.  This one was hosted by Ghostfish Brewing who provided two beers, an IPA and a white ale.

They are located just a few blocks from Safeco Field and are a small brewery of about fifteen barrels who have been around only a couple of years.  I really liked their white ale and Bruce really liked the IPA, but then he always likes real hoppy beers.

The food was excellent, too, which included some barbecued pulled pork sliders

some hummus with veggies

coleslaw, stuffed peppers wrapped in bacon and some chili beef empanadas.  They were all prefect choices to go with beer.

We had nice visits with other season ticket holders and we also ran into our season ticket representative who was there so we had a good chance to get caught up with him.  We seem to run into him at least once a year, like last year when we took Bruce's dad to Safeco for his 90th birthday.

He is responsible for inviting us to deliver the honorary game ball to home plate at the season opener in 2012.  We will be forever friends with him.

We wandered around Safeco Field after the beer-tasting since we still had about an hour before the first pitch.  We watched the broadcasters for awhile

and paused for a photo op with Dave Niehaus.

I was a fun birthday evening.  But I think the best present for Bruce on this day was from the tree guys who came to trim trees on our property and next door.

It seems like they have a treacherous job but they do it with such ease. They truly amaze us.  This is the second time we've had them come out to trim our trees and this time they also did the neighbors property which was a much bigger job but no problem for them.

It made a big difference in our view, as you can see.

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friend lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, t...

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides ...

Two-Bean Soup with Kale

This hearty vegetarian soup warms up chilly nights.  Use any type of canned beans you happen to have on hand and add chicken or Italian sausage for a heftier dish, if you prefer.
