This year was the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl and our first Super Bowl party since returning to Seattle. We decided to do our usual; the betting board
Besides tasting delicious, the cookies are a big part of the decor. Edible decor. The best kind.
We cooked a ham and I made my cheesy potatoes and everybody else brought delicious salads, appetizers and desserts. There was an abundance of food - what Super Bowl Sunday is all about. But this year was a little different. It wasn't about football this year. Now that we live in a town with a team, I'm sorry to say that it just isn't as interesting if it isn't our guys playing. This football season was so exciting, planning every game day around the Seahawks kick-off time. If it's not the Seahawks in the Super Bowl (after being spoiled the past 2 years) then it's a let down. So, this year, the Super Bowl party was about something so much more. It was about reuniting with old friends like my two dietitian friends of the past 30-plus years.
And Bruce reunited with his cousin whom we hadn't seen in probably 20-plus years. In fact, she brought her Super Bowl potluck dish in the wedding gift platter we had given her 27 years ago.
This was a party of reminiscing good times from a previous Seattle life. There were so many of those moments where you couldn't help but think, "has it really been that long ago?" I guess we are all getting older but we don't feel that old! Bruce said he couldn't hear a word of the broadcast because of the constant chatter. What broadcast? Was there a game going on? I seriously saw very little of the game nor the commercials. We did all stop to watch the singing of the national anthem by Lady Gaga who did a remarkable job
and we stopped to also watch the half time show preformed by Cold Pay, Bruno Mars and Beyonce.
The betting board had questions regarding these events, of course, and we all wanted to watch to see if we won.
The other distraction on this day, besides all our old friends bringing up memories, was the view. It was a beautiful Seattle day, with another beautiful sunset reflecting off the city and Mt. Rainier was out in all her rose-pink glory.
Often, there would be as many people peering out the window as were on the TV screen. You just couldn't help yourself in going out onto the deck every once in a while. It's a very strong pull in that direction when the view is that spectacular.
Even if the Super Bowl is on TV.
