LOVE

I've been telling myself it's too early to decorate for Valentine's Day but I saw this pillow at Target and I just LOVE it!  Of course, all the stores have Valentine's Day stuff already.  We need to get through Super Bowl first before I can think about Valentine's Day but I still LOVE this pillow enough to keep it out.  It looks so perfect on my mom's old recliner that I got after she passed away.  I always loved her recliner and I loved her so the pillow is perfect in more ways than one. Ever since we put away all the Christmas stuff, our house has looked so bare.  Lauren said it was so bare it was giving her "the creeps".  I thought it looked bare, too.  It made me feel empty inside after such a fun holiday season.  I decided to unpacked a few more boxes to find some "home decor" to put around but all the stuff I have now is only worthy for maybe the basement.  Not that great of stuff.  So, last weekend I went on a mission to look for some stuff to decorate the house and make it feel a little more lived in.  The first thing that came to mind were these orchids I saw at Metropolitan Market. Gorgeous!

One would look perfect on the fireplace mantel.

Unfortunately, the smallest one was $69.95.  Keep looking.  It would probably die anyway, the way I am with plants.  I decided to put some candles on the mantel instead and they looked very nice.  Since we've lived in this house, I've always had seasonal decor starting with fall in September.  Now, it's not really any special time which is why our house looks so bare.  I don't know what to use to decorate for no theme.  Then I went to Target and found my LOVE pillow and a fake orchid for $19.95.  Score!  The mantel is complete and the pillow brings out a pop of color.

You can't even tell it's fake, can you?  And it won't die!  No longer bare.

I was on a roll for more pillows.  I stopped into Pier One Import, no luck.  Then Fred Meyer.  Score again!  Everything was on sale so I got a couple more pillows for $20 each.

Lauren moved our West Seattle pillow (that Bruce got for Christmas) to join the new pillows to " bring it all together", she said.  She has a better eye for these things than I do so I believe her.  I think it looks great.  Our house is no longer bare.  Just a simple shopping trip to "bring it all together".  And I think mom would approve of her recliner being  the home of my LOVE pillow.  LOVE you, mom!

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friend lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, t...

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides ...

Two-Bean Soup with Kale
