Coffee Convention

I attended an international coffee convention over the weekend in Seattle where you could learn anything you ever wanted know about coffee.

Bruce was there to promote his line of equipment that the Bratney Companies sells.  They've already put equipment in all the Starbuck's processing plants around the country.

They travel to many trade shows promoting their equipment which, aside from sorting out coffee beans, is also good for sorting all kinds of nuts and grains.  Bruce was there with a few of the other guys involved with this particular piece of equipment.

Of course, Starbucks was there and Bruce's booth was conveniently located just down the aisle from them.

They had one of the largest booths

which is only fitting since they originated in Seattle.

Today, they were letting us sample one of their Starbucks Reserve coffees.

There were hundreds of vendors there demonstrating all different ways to brew coffee.

and so many different, beautiful espresso machines.

 I like this retro machine.

This is the largest espresso machine I've ever seen!

You could definitely say that this convention was buzzing.  With everyone drinking samples of coffee...it was a hopping place!

There were lots of companies promoting their fair trade certification

and labor practices

even Tom and Jerry's ice cream was there.

But Ghirardelli was the best booth.  Who can resist Ghirardelli?

T
This was better than a Starbuck's frappicinno.

There were so many samples of everything to try, you really could compare any coffee drink you wanted.

And coffees from all around the world were displayed since it was an international show.

There is so much culture and tradition associated with coffee.

That's the part about coffee that I like.

From the laid-back ambiance of Hawaii to the high tech machinery

this coffee convention had everything.

Did you know you can buy your own green coffee beans

and roast them yourself with a multiple selection of coffee roasters.

I like this coffee roaster that looks like a train.

And lets not forget about the beverages that go along with coffee like the smoothies and teas.

There are a multitude of smoothie products, coffee syrups,

and teas.

And how you drink your product is important, as well.

There were all kinds of interesting cups and glassware.

and ready-to-drink products.

As with all trade shows, there are the pre- and post-conferences events that are usually offered, but since Bruce and I are from Seattle, we provided our own entertainment for the guys which included a Mariner baseball game.

Clause (second from the left) is from Denmark where the equipment is made.  He was not familiar with the rules of baseball but he still loved the game.  Weiland (far right) is from Germany and he is the coffee bean expert.  Bruce is on the far left and Darren is second from the right who is from Bratney Companies' main office in Iowa.  The second night we had a wonderful dinner at Anthony's Home Port on Pier 66 that we walked to from the hotel.  We had a table with a view.

Since we walked to the restaurant, I took the guys on the scenic route through the Public Market

and we made a quick stop at the gum wall located in an alley behind the Market.  The guys enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at a Seattle original.

Bruce and I enjoyed the Market in the morning before the convention started since it was only a few blocks away.

And we all know how much I love the Public Market. I never a miss an opportunity to spend time there.

My second favorite place is Green Lake and I had time to do my walk around Green lake.

The turtles were out today.

The weekend was also filled with shopping - gotta love Nordstrom shoes -

but if you want athletic shoes, Nordstrom will analyze your feet first.

All in all, we had great success shopping this weekend

with time to catch dinner at Cactus that has our favorite margaritas called the Baja Margarita made with jalapeños and cilantro.  We just love them!

We also paid a visit to some friends who recently bought a home on Puget Sound. We had to take a ferry to get there.

We spent the night there and woke up to a GORGEOUS view.

Cheers to good friends, good drink, good food, good coffee, great weekend!

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides a plan for responsible eating that covers a no-nonsense rundown on

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friends lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, there was a big party g

Spinach Stuffed Cod

Last night, I was in the mood for a healthy dinner so decided to experiment with a recipe I found from a blog called Creative in My Kitchen . Lauren and Ari brought us French cookies back from their trip to Paris and I basically inhaled them. They were so good! We were cat-sitting their two cats while they were gone. They liked lounging in the strangest places...  I found one of their toys while I was cleaning so Lauren stopped by last night to pick it up on her way home from work. I was experimenting with this recipe which originally called for chicken breast but I thought it sounded good to substitute fish instead since I'm always looking for good fish recipes. We all thought it was totally delicious. When I went to the grocery store, they had Icelandic cod on sale so I bought about 2 pounds of that. You could use any white fish for this recipe such as:                                                                   true cod or other cod rockfish halibut had
