Tonight was a lovely evening in Eagle, Idaho so Bruce and I took a little stroll downtown and stumbled into Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe.
How could you not stumble into it! The lollipops were beckoning us to come in!
I have seen these lollipops for the past year and thought they were so cute but I've never taken the time to stop and go into this new little candy shop that opened here last June. It's located in the old historic Eagle Hotel
right across from Orville Jackson's - that's been here forever.
We actually went out to grab a pizza at Smoky Mountain Pizza because they moved into a new location last year and we've never been to their new place. (where did last year go anyway?) They now have a really nice patio and this was the perfect evening to sit outside and enjoy the unofficial beginning of summer.
We ordered a caprese pizza
with a local brew from Payette Brewing and our evening was complete…until the lollipops beckoned us.
I was so surprised when we walked in. It was huge! And so much candy! I had no idea there was so much space behind these walls.
But it wasn't even the volume of candy inside this shop, it was also the kind of candy. Childhood memories immediately began rushing through my head like it was yesterday! I remembered my grandpa sending me cigar boxes of these whenever I wrote him a letter.
He wasn't able to write well so he'd just send me candy to acknowledge that he received my letter. I was always thrilled. These delicious little melt-in-your-mouth chocolates. I loved them! Or these little bags of gold...
These were yellow (golden nuggets) bubble gum that looked like you had panned for gold and it came in this neat burlap bag like real gold. Wow! Sometimes my grandpa would put a silver dollar coin in the bag for a special surprise. I haven't thought about these candies in ages. It just went on and on...
Sugar Daddy, Abba Zaba, Good & Plenty, Milk Duds, Boston Baked Beans, Big Hunk. I remember how we use to go down to "the little store" when we lived by Green Lake in Seattle and buy penny candy - that is candy that cost 1 penny. Can you imagine? That you could actually buy something for a penny? We'd buy little bags of it. That was so fun to do and we did it a lot. There was a little bell on the door when you walked in and so much candy on the front counter all neatly laid out in beautiful display. It was always so hard to decide which candy to buy with your pennies.
I loved jaw breakers, too. They've changed a lot over the years, though. They've gotten so big like so many things nowadays. How can anybody eat one so big? There was also local homemade candies here called The Chocolat Bar.
Simply a little bit of something for everybody! If all this candy made you thirsty, there was also quite a good selection of old fashioned sodas like Orange Crush, Squirt, or RC Cola.
Now, I am sorry that it has taken me so long to check out Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe so close to my house. I will definitely return since I already saw so many things to buy as gifts for some lucky people! And I might just pick up a few little penny candies for myself.
