Today, we got a couple of new chickens from Travis and Courtney to add to our flock. We've been hesitant to get new chicks the past few years because we've been gone a lot and it's just one more thing for our "house/pet-sitter" to take care of since chicks require a lot of attention. Our last group of chicks were a dozen we got in 2009 and they have since dwindled down to 2 chickens after illnesses and predators have gotten them, a Plymonth Barred Rock and a Buff-Orphington.
But this year our next door neighbors moved and gave us two of the their Leghorns.
Now we've gotten a couple more from Courtney and Travis because they ended up with more chickens than planned after Courtney decided she also wanted some "exotic" egg layers. They gave us a Rhode Island Red and another Buff-Orphingon.
I can see why Courtney wanted some exotics, they are so cute! I don't know exotic breeds but I just call this one a Phyllis Diller chicken.
They have quite a few exotics.
Plus, their 30 domestic chickens will make for quite a few eggs once they start laying!
They also have 5 turkeys wandering around their yard for future holiday meals. Nice.
We checked out the garden while we were there, as they have the most impressive garden I've seen! The corn looks healthy at about 8 feet tall!
Some nice Idaho potatoes, of course.
They like to eat pickled okra so they planted this beautiful okra garden which is now ready to harvest.
Some of the okra will be red and some are green.
I think I've only seen okra in jambalaya but then I'm not from the South which is where okra is popular. The plant also has beautiful blossoms.
More in the garden…
artichoke.
Cabbage
Watermelon
Green onions
tomatoes from one of their 21 tomato plants
Cucumbers for eating
and cucumbers for pickling.
peaches growing on the peach tree
green beans
strawberries
wild blackberries that were already there
with marigolds everywhere to ward off bad bugs and attract the good bugs
and don't forget the various herbs growing here and there
Thank you, Travis and Courtney, for your inspirational garden tour! And also for our two new additions to our flock.
