Around the Neighborhood

I'm am enjoying this phase of moving the most.  We have a lot of boxes to unpack

but they aren't anything urgent so we still have time to explore our new neighborhood. One of the reasons we wanted to live in this neighborhood is because it reminds us of old Seattle that we remember, not the up-scaled Seattle that has happened to a lot of the neighborhoods. Our neighborhood theater has remained unchanged since 1942. They recently just installed two new laser digital projectors so we still need to go check it out.

The first photo above is the Admiral Bird which is a florist and small, funky cafe that we've stopped in a couple of times already for breakfast and lunch. Very dog-friendly, as you can see. That's how I remember Seattle.

Every weekend is Waffle Weekend at the Bird.

We stopped in for lunch when we first arrived in town with limited food. My cobb salad really hit the spot.

The tables are chalk boards so you can express you inner desires.

Last week I was due for a cut, color, and highlight hair appointment so I found this cute little Aveda shop that I walked to and was very happy with the results.

One evening, Nick, Lauren and I walked to "the Junction" which is about 1-1/2 miles away from our house.  The Junction is the real hopping area of restaurants, bars, and shops.  We stopped in at Uptown Espresso, Home for the Velvet Foam.  They are known for their frozen lattes which are perfect during this Seattle heat wave we are having right now.

It didn't take Bruce and I long to discovered the Great Harvest Bakery which is also at The Junction. We've already been there several times.

I will soon be spoiled with all my grocery shopping options around here. I can walk to three grocery stores including Metropolitan Market

and our local Puget Consumer's Coop.  I'm in heaven.

One of our favorite places isn't even a food place. It's our local bicycle shop called Alki Bike and Board. It use to be located down at Alki Beach but parking became such a problem that the owner, Stu, moved his business up to Admiral. Lucky us because we love this place.

Everybody knows Stu, who has been running his shop since 1971.  Even though Stu always seems busy in his shop, he will always make the time to chat with those you just stop in to say "Hi".

His shop is run like a well-oiled bike wheel.  Stu is often serving 2 or more people at a time because he is a multi-tasker at it's best and everyone wants to talk to Stu, including me.  He's a character and I love his choice of T-shirts.

We had a few things that needed to be done to our bikes so that's how we met Stu. Riding your bike is a big part of Seattle lifestyle so we didn't waste anytime getting our bikes in shape.

We live close to Alki Beach, another perk of our neighborhood

so that's where we plan to be a lot of the time.  An easy bike ride and beautiful views.

Views, views, views.  That comes up a lot where we live now.  What more can I say?

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides a plan for responsible eating that covers a no-nonsense rundown on

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friend lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, there was a big party go

Waking Up in Vegas

and just like that...we were Waking Up in Vegas.   Just like the Katy Perry song. We went to her 78th performance which was her second-to-last Las Vegas residency show entitled "Play".  That was perfect for us because we went to Vegas simply to play.  Her concert was a great finale for us because it was high energy and full of silliness, just the way Katy Perry is.  And we were feeling it after three nights in Las Vegas. "Get up, and shake the gutter off your clothes now, That's what you get for waking up in Vegas".    Here's what she said about her show: "I created this show after the birth of my daughter, Daisy Dove. When I met her, it was like all the love I was ever searching for finally showed up. This show is for everyone’s inner child and for the hope that maybe if we could all see life through the eyes of a child, we would be free. Because never forget, love is and will always be the key,” she said. We went to Vegas spur of the moment because Br
