Father's Day 2024

This year was a busy Father's Day but that's okay because the past few months have been rather relaxing for us.  I'm not going to say "boring" because the older I get, the more I like those kind of days and "boring" connotes negativity which isn't how it’s been at all.  I guess if we're  not traveling or having out-of-town visitors coming to our house, then our typical days are just "relaxing" and there's nothing wrong with that.  But this past weekend, my brother and wife came to Seattle so I decided to plan a family barbecue while they were here which ended up being on Father’s Day.

After dealing with covid the past four years, I feel like I am getting back into the hang of hosting large gatherings again. I admit that I did get out of practice there for awhile.  The end of March was our Mariner Ticket Party and we'd only been home a few days from a visit to Washington D.C. but we threw that one together pretty well and everyone had a lot of fun with some good baseball vibes happening.

It feels good to be back to it again.  For Father's Day, Bruce barbecued our favorite Teriyaki Flank Steak and he also made some of his smoked salmon.  I set up a DIY banana split bar for dessert because I wanted to make my Homemade Chocolate Sauce with all the glorious berries that are in season right now.  Needless to say, our dessert was a huge hit with everyone of all ages.

My brother wanted to hit the sports scene while he was here so they went to the Sounders on Saturday and Bruce and I went to the Mariners with them on Sunday and it was a great game.  We swept the Texas Rangers who are our rivals with a sold out crowd.  It was every exciting.

We got home just in time to prepare for the other remaining family members to arrive.  I made homemade Fathers Day cards ahead of time for the three fathers who came.

I used my decorative scrapbooking technique since I've gotten back into scrapbooking again (after doing some cleaning out of the basement last summer and finding all kinds of stuff to put in them).  I gave the dads Dick's Drive-In gift certificates, a local favorite around here since 1954.  And everybody loves Dick's!

I've done two scrapbooks so far from the ‘70’s starting after my high school graduation in 1973.   I'm on 1979 now so I'm plowing through my youth; I'm just about to meet Bruce (1980) - a major turning point in my life.  It's weird going back and seeing my life in photos all clearly laid out in a scrapbook.   I could never have planned all the things that happened to me and sometimes I really wonder how it all did happen but it just did.  And now here we are.  Celebrating another Father's Day as our family continues to grow as nieces and nephews have children; our son has children;  Bruce and I are grandparents, for heaven's sake! We've come a long way since our young selves of 1980.  We've been lucky to have such a great family and Bruce deserves to be celebrated this Father's Day for being such a great dad and I'm so happy we could celebrate the way we did.  Happy Father's Day!

Meatloaf by Mark Bittman

Once again, I turned on the television yesterday and saw that Mark Bittman was on the Today show and was making his version of  meatloaf .  This must be meatloaf season.  It was surprisingly similar to the  Pioneer Woman's version  who was also recently on.   I was a little surprised of his version because Mark Bittman is into healthy eating and has lost a lot of weight and improved his health by changing his diet which he writes about in his book,  Food Matters .  His meatloaf recipe also included bacon and cheese!  I must be doing something wrong.  The thing to remember, which he writes about in his book, is that you can eat healthy without going extreme or changing your whole life.    If you don't know who Mark Bittman is, he is a food writer and a four star chef with multiple cookbooks who loves to eat but changed his food philosophy to improve his health.  He tells his story in Food Matters and provides a plan for responsible eating that covers a no-nonsense rundown on

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don't have very many gluten-free cookies on my blog because quite frankly, I usually don't like gluten-free.  But occasionally, I do find a good recipe and this is one that is from the back of the Trader Joe's oatmeal and it's a good one.  My friend brought some over to our house last weekend when Nick and family were here for our birthday celebrations  and we all loved them. My friend lives a few blocks away and we walk the neighborhood together on weekends.  We can easily go 5 miles in no time, talking non-stop.  She loves exploring our neighborhood as much as I do and we discover so many favorite little spots.  We even found a property with a horse (or more like a pony, I should say.)   The views are always quite lovely, too.  Bruce and I had our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary on July 18th and I made a point of walking past the house where we had our wedding reception.  I told my friend, "Thirty-nine years ago today, there was a big party go

Waking Up in Vegas

and just like that...we were Waking Up in Vegas.   Just like the Katy Perry song. We went to her 78th performance which was her second-to-last Las Vegas residency show entitled "Play".  That was perfect for us because we went to Vegas simply to play.  Her concert was a great finale for us because it was high energy and full of silliness, just the way Katy Perry is.  And we were feeling it after three nights in Las Vegas. "Get up, and shake the gutter off your clothes now, That's what you get for waking up in Vegas".    Here's what she said about her show: "I created this show after the birth of my daughter, Daisy Dove. When I met her, it was like all the love I was ever searching for finally showed up. This show is for everyone’s inner child and for the hope that maybe if we could all see life through the eyes of a child, we would be free. Because never forget, love is and will always be the key,” she said. We went to Vegas spur of the moment because Br
