Crepes Galore

When you think of crepes, you probably think of extravagant and difficult but they really aren't.  I use to make crepes when my kids were little and they always loved them, hot off the grill.  They would come home from school and I'd whip up some crepes (literally, since you make them in the blender.)  They would eat them as fast as I cooked them, one by one right out of the pan.  I don't know why I stopped making them because everybody still loves them.  So, on the first night that Nick was here from Japan, I asked him what he wanted to eat while he was home.  I mentioned the possibility of having a family brunch on Saturday and he and Lauren immediately requested crepes.   I hadn't even thought about making crepes in such a long time but apparently they've never forgotten.  It was unanimous. Crepes for brunch it was.  And the crepes were a huge success.  They are not extravagant or difficult.  Just plain good.  ...

Wild Rice Casserole

Tonight, we had a family dinner of game hens, broccolini,  dill bread , wild rice casserole and pecan pie for dessert before we opened presents from Japan from Nick and Sachiyo.  They leave December 9th so we are having our Christmas early while they are here.   I know this doesn't sound like a Christmas dinner but Nick is putting in requests of what he'd like to eat while he's home and I am doing my best to accommodate him - pecan pie, roast beef and gravy, Great Harvest cinnamon rolls - to name a few favorites.  I almost forgot to take a photo of my plate, most of my broccolini is gone...and you can see that I like a little butter on my dill bread. I love wild rice but it can be hard to prepare because it is so tough.  It isn't a rice at all but a type of grass and it can be quite expensive.  We got this wild rice from Bruce's nephew and wife who live in Minnesota where wild rice is a native plant.  I use to make this re...

Temaki and Miso Soup

Tonight, we were pampered with a most delicious dinner of temaki and miso soup.  We've been having too much fun since Nick and Sachiyo arrived two days ago with our new little grand baby, Hana, and we've been enjoying every minute including a wonderful dinner tonight.  The first night they were here we had  beef stroganoff  and last night we had roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. If you're wondering why the gravy is so light colored, it's because the roast beef didn't have much juice so I made the gravy using some of the  turkey stock  I made on Saturday.  Nick just needed his red meat fix and mashed potatoes and gravy fix.  He also wanted a pecan pie for dessert since he missed Thanksgiving so I made a  bourbon pecan pie and he had it with both ice cream and whipped cream. Tonight, he was ready to go back to his Japanese diet so he and Sachiyo made a very common Japanese meal to share with us called tem...
