Soup Season

We are back from our vacation and Bruce's T-shirt from  Raven  was in our mail with a little note from Raven and a copy of his newsletter for us to read.  Bruce has noticed that his  website  hasn't been updated yet to include him as a runner.  Bruce will be listed as "Permission".  It looks like his website hasn't been update since about September 2013 because that was the last time a runner was recorded running with him.  Bruce said that when they were running, Raven talked about how computer illiterate he is and someone else does his website for him.  But he sure does a good job with all his statistics he keeps! Now that we are home, our first meal is soup. I made one of my favorite  vegetable soup  recipes and added chopped up chicken breast and some noodles so it was more like chicken noodle vegetable soup. I used these Chinese Egg Noodles and it made for a delicious chicken noodle soup. The next night, I had my craving for lima b

Run, Raven, Run

Here he comes.  Can you see him?   Today, there are 3 others running with South Beach's native, nicknamed the Raven.  Raven has run this 8 mile jog everyday for the past 39 years and is keeping his streak alive at age 63. On this evening, Raven has a newcomer joining him that Raven has nicknamed Permission.  Raven nicknames all this running-friends who join him, all 1,942 of them over the 39 years of his streak. Close Call is running tonight, one of the Raven's regulars along with Poutine, another regular that Raven nicknamed because she has many French-Canadian friends who eat poutine but now she has given it up in her attempts to be healthy. I wrote about poutine when we visited the  Skillet Diner , a good thing she has given it up.  Close Call got his name because he worked in the Twin Towers in New York on September 11, 2001 but had called in sick because of a bad case of food poisoning from the weekend before.  He is from Finland, now l

Miami Beach -South Beach

We have about 36 hours in South Beach before we catch our Caribbean cruise for vacation. We left Las Vegas yesterday and now Bruce can start relaxing since his convention is over. We are in the midsts of South Beach, Florida now - the high today of 83, the low of 73. I can handle that! After another day of travel, we headed out last night for dinner at Lincoln Road Mall  which is about 10 blocks long. (no cars on this road). There are plenty of shops, restaurants, art galleries, bars, clubs and retail chains such as Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, etc. You get the picture, most anything you'd figure in South Beach. I even found a third Serendipity . There were lots of Italian restaurants so we stopped for some pasta and salad. Italian seems to always taste good after a day of travel. Dessert was gelato which really hit the spot and plenty to choose from. This morning we couldn't wait to get up an

First Food, Then Chocolate

As a dietitian, you always hear jokes about the Four Food Groups.  That was before the Food Guide Pyramid, which was before  MyPlate .  I always said there ought to be a food group for chocolate.  I'm not one of those who eat chocolate everyday or anything but I do LOVE chocolate. And now that I'm in Vegas - the land of plenty-and plenty of everything-and that includes CHOCOLATE.  I started counting all the chocolate places I've run across and finally stopped counting, just like I stopped counting how many miles I must be walking everyday. This is the land of over-abundance of everything!  Yesterday, I ran into the world's largest chocolate fountain. Pictures do not do this justice but I'll try. This is located near the lobby of the Bellagio in a French bakery cafe  where I stopped for a little bite to eat - a tuna pannini. It was just a pre-made, quick bite to eat but it was so delicious - the perfect crunch
